Description

Learn about the value of sharks and what is causing the rapid loss of shark populations.

Sharks are crucial to marine ecosystems. They maintain a balance in populations of prey species and keep the ocean healthy by removing ill or diseased animals. They are an important resource supporting local economies through fishing, and as an attraction to dive tourists.

But sharks are in a global decline. Overfishing has reduced many shark populations around the world to levels that threaten their continued existence. Shark numbers have fallen by more than 80% in many cases, and the continued existence of some species is at immediate risk in some regions.

Discover what makes sharks unique and find out that, despite their bad reputation, they play a crucial role in keeping our ocean healthy. You’ll also learn about the management strategies that can help protect sharks and, best of all, the many actions you can take to give sharks a fighting chance.

This course is best combined with a Club Immerse trip to experience diving with sharks.  If you choose this option then during two dives you apply the lessons from knowledge development to assess features of a dive location for potential impacts on sharks, and to observe shark behaviour.

Your certification fee also helps to support Project AWARE and the vital work they do to conserve our ocean environment, so it’s a great way to support Project AWARE whilst learning more about the underwater life they seek to protect.

This is a full PADI Speciality, and counts towards your Master Scuba Diver qualification.
